Earlier in the year I obtained one of these ---->

And decided I wanted to compare this model with the two previous I had owned, the Variax 300, and the Variax 600. There have been many improvements and I love the guitar, but there are still some flaws to work out. Below are totally DRY examples, recorded through a PodHD500 directly digital into my DAW, Reaper, with no processing at all. Not even an amp. Feel free to take the flac examples and process them with the guitar amp emulator of your choice to see how it sounds.

  • All Models Dry

  • Other Sound Examples

  • Quality Issues

  • Variax 300 -> 2005

  • Alt-Tunings

The demos features all of the models, all played with alternate tunings:

    There was an obvious issue of mud and a "plink" noise in the old vax's when you would attempt a palm mute. This was dismissed by some, acknowledged by others with a suggestion to adapt, and loathed by many.

however, it was finally acknowledged by line 6 in their latest incarnation of the variax, the JTV.

    let's see how they did..

    Below are the dry files, in both mp3 and flac format in order for you to be able to process it however you wish.

the wet files are files through my amp simulator, revlaver MKIII, using a generic metal preset which sounds great!

Youll notice I am simply going through the vax models one by one in the bridge p/u position. The final sound you will hear are the magnetic pickups from the variax.

Notable Differences between last sound clip (magnetic pickups) and the rest (variax digital emulations through piezo):

  1. More possibility of microphonic feedback with Variax models (could also be the model type and authenticity - if you tried to palm mute on high gain on a hollowbody guitar, it may do the exact same thing)
  2. decresed attack on variax models vs. the magnetic pickups. Basically, you will not be able to achieve the "sharpest" sound with the variax emulations - it will sound slightly more muddy. Some amps may mask this due to the fact that the distortion may not have a great "attack" to begin with.
